Echet Hayil

The “Echet Hayil” is a biblical passage that is usually recited or sung during the Friday evening meal (the start of Shabbat) in honour of the woman of the house. The term “Echet Hayil” literally translates as “Woman of Valour” or “Virtuous Woman” in English.

This passage comes from the Book of Proverbs in the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) and is often attributed to King Solomon. It consists of 22 alphabetical verses, each beginning with a letter of the Hebrew alphabet, praising the qualities and virtues of an ideal woman.
